About us

Lisa’s journey into electrology began as a client. After learning that electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal—and seeing firsthand how effective it was—she knew she had found her calling. She went on to open her own practice in Schaumburg, earned her electrologist license, and now runs a thriving business with two employees. Lisa also serves as the Membership Chair for the Electrology Association of Illinois and is one of the newest co-owners of an electrology school. Blending her background in computer programming with her passion for the industry, her latest venture is the development of software designed to help electrology schools run more efficiently. Finally, having personally felt the emotional toll of unwanted hair, Lisa finds deep fulfillment helping to shape the electrology industry, providing technology solutions for our schools, and in helping her clients regain their confidence—and leave behind both the insecurity and No More Hair.

Understanding the Journey to Electrolysis Permanent Hair Removal

01.

Patience Required

Permanent results take patience. Each hair follicle needs to be treated individually, and most effective during the anagen phase of hair growth.

02.

Tolerance Levels

Pain varies from person to person. Some people describe the sensation as a quick sting or a sharp zap, while others find it barely noticeable. Since everyone’s pain threshold is different, the best way to know how it feels for you is to try a short session and see how your body responds.

03.

A Permanent Solution

The electrolysis journey marks a pivotal step in permanent hair removal, especially for those who've struggled with unwanted hair that’s led to shame, isolation, or low self-esteem. For many, it’s a path to renewed confidence—kind of like emerging from a cocoon as a beautiful butterfly.

Understanding the Journey to Electrolysis Permanent Hair Removal
by Lisa L. Walker, L.E.

Electrolysis is a well-established method for permanent hair removal, approved by the FDA and favored by individuals seeking a long-term solution to unwanted hair. But like any transformative process, the journey to smooth, hair-free skin through electrolysis is not without its challenges—and it’s essential to approach it with a realistic understanding of what’s involved.

Whether you’re considering electrolysis for aesthetic reasons, medical necessity, or gender affirmation, this article explores the key components of the process: pain tolerance, potential side effects, and the financial and time commitments that come with it.

What is Electrolysis?
Electrolysis works by inserting a tiny probe into each hair follicle and applying a short burst of electrical current. This destroys the hair growth cells in the follicle, preventing regrowth. Unlike laser hair removal, which targets pigment and isn’t effective for all hair colors or skin tones, electrolysis works on all skin types and hair types.

Tolerance for the Pain
One of the most common questions people have is: Does electrolysis hurt?

The honest answer? It depends.

Pain tolerance varies significantly from person to person. Most describe the sensation as a sharp zap or a quick stinging feeling—similar to a rubber band snap or pinprick. Some areas, like the upper lip, bikini line, or underarms, may feel more sensitive than others. Factors influencing discomfort include:

- Area being treated
- Personal pain threshold
- Hydration and stress levels
- Hormonal cycles (e.g., periods may heighten sensitivity)

Topical numbing creams or local anesthetics are sometimes used for more sensitive individuals or extensive sessions.

Possible Side Effects
It’s crucial to understand that side effects vary based on individual skin type, medical history, and how the skin reacts to treatment. While electrolysis is generally safe when performed by a licensed electrologist, some common and temporary side effects may include:

- Redness: Usually resolves within a few hours to a day.
- Swelling: Especially after longer sessions; ice packs help minimize this.
- Scabbing: Tiny scabs may form—a sign of healing, not damage. Avoid picking!
- Itching: Can occur as the skin heals but usually subsides quickly.
- Hyperpigmentation or Hypopigmentation: In some individuals, especially those with
darker skin tones, there may be temporary (or rarely, permanent) changes in skin color.
Proper aftercare and avoiding sun exposure help reduce this risk.
- Ingrown hairs: Occasionally occur as the skin recovers.

These side effects can typically be minimized by following aftercare instructions such as avoiding makeup, sun exposure, and excessive touching of the treated area.

Financial Commitment
Electrolysis is an investment—both in money and in yourself. Costs vary based on location, electrologist experience, and the size of the area being treated. Sessions are usually priced by time, often ranging from:

- $45–$80 for 15 minutes
- $80–$100 for 30 minutes
- $100–$150 for 45 minutes
- $150–$250 for 60 minutes
(higher fees are usually associated with genital services)

Because electrolysis treats one follicle at a time, multiple sessions are needed—often dozens to hundreds depending on the treatment area and hair density.

Pro Tip: Request a consultation to discuss pricing. Some clinics offer payment plans.

Time Commitment
Permanent results take patience. Each hair follicle needs to be treated multiple times, especially since hair grows in cycles: anagen (active), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting). Electrolysis is most effective during the anagen phase, which not all hairs are in at once.

Expect:
- Weekly or biweekly sessions at first.
- A commitment of 12–18 months or more for complete clearance (depending on the
  area).
- Maintenance touch-ups as needed.
- For small areas like the upper lip or chin, you might finish sooner. Larger areas (like legs
or full face) take significantly longer.

Final Thoughts
The journey to permanent hair removal through electrolysis is not a quick fix, but it’s a transformative and empowering process for many. Understanding the pain tolerance required, preparing for possible side effects, and committing financially and timewise will help you approach treatment with confidence and realistic expectations.

Electrolysis marks a pivotal step in permanent hair removal, especially for those who've struggled with unwanted hair that’s led to shame, isolation, or low self-esteem. For many, it’s a path to renewed confidence—like emerging from a cocoon as a beautiful butterfly.

If you’re ready to take the first step, book a consultation with a certified electrologist. It’s your body—and investing in your comfort and confidence is always worth it.
